REVIEW: The L'Oreal Skin Perfection BB Cream 5in1 Instant Blemish Balm

Over the years I’ve tried many miracle blemish balms that promise to blur imperfections, provide a decent coverage and look as natural as possible. To be honest, many of these beauty balms (or BB creams as they’re known as) have failed to live up to the hype. As someone who’s suffered from blemishes for years, it can be really frustrating trying out product after product, only to end up disappointed because it hasn’t lived up to its claims.

On another note, sometimes you come across a product by accident and it becomes an instant favourite.

So recently, I received the Skin Perfection BB Cream 5in1 Instant Blemish Balm by L’Oreal from my sister. My first thought was ‘OK, another BB cream, I’m sure it’s nothing special’. In fact, I didn’t even test it out until weeks later. I didn’t think it would be anything special, and to be honest, the packaging looked plain and boring to me (yes, I get sucked in by pretty packaging). When I did finally reach for it one morning, on a day when I didn’t feel like wearing foundation, I totally changed my mind.

This is probably the best BB cream I’ve ever used. Trust L’Oreal to come through with the goods (I’ve always liked L’Oreal and have used their products for years). I’ve been using it for a few weeks now so I thought a review was in order.

What is it: The L’Oreal Skin Perfection BB Cream 5in1 Instant Blemish Balm.

Product information: A 5 in 1 blemish balm which provides 24 hour hydration, evens and brightens skin tone, targets the appearance of dark spots, corrects redness and imperfections and contains an SPF15. It has a tinted formula and claims to fade redness over time.

My review: I typically apply a tinted moisturiser right after I moisturise my face in the morning. I do this for two reasons: for extra hydration and to add another layer of coverage. I prefer to build up coverage instead of applying one thick layer of foundation. It’s just something that I’ve always done and it works well for my skin, as heavy makeup can give me breakouts. I then apply a thin layer of my usual foundation.

Squeezed out of the tube…
And blended out. This is a really good match to my skin tone.

BB creams are not tinted moisturisers; they tend to be slightly heavier in coverage and have a thicker texture. Because my usual tinted moisturiser has recently run out, I’ve been using the Skin Perfection BB Cream 5in1 Instant Blemish Balm by L’Oreal in its place. I normally squeeze out a small amount and apply it to my face as if it were a tinted moisturiser. I find that applying this alone provides enough coverage for me, but I prefer extra coverage for my workday so I’ll apply foundation as well. I keep it simple on weekends and only use the BB cream. Once applied on the skin, it looks very natural and fresh. I find that it does fade during the day however I am still left with slight coverage and to be honest, I don’t think BB creams are meant to last all day.

In terms of coverage, I’m really impressed at how well this conceals my minor skin blemishes; I haven’t had to use concealer at all which is great.

I use the shade ‘Light’ and I can’t emphasize enough how well this matches my skin tone. This shade is slightly on the beige side, however it isn’t noticeable at all once it’s blended into the skin. I have a light complexion with a yellow undertone so if you have similar colouring this shade will be a good match for you!
One other thing I really like about this BB cream is that it isn’t matte. I prefer a dewy look and this one does that perfectly.

If you’re looking for a BB cream with decent coverage I highly, highly recommend the L’Oreal Skin Perfection BB Cream 5in1 Instant Blemish Balm! I’m about halfway through the tube and have already planned to repurchase it once I run out.

What is your favourite BB cream?
