Is it just me or did 2018 feel like it dragged on F O R E V E R? Looking back, it was a jam packed year. On the other hand, it was a memorable year (at times not in a good way) and it feels good to be here in 2019 and starting a brand new year. How do you normally start a new year? Are you the type to flip a switch and enter into the new year with a fresh outlook, or do you sort of shuffle in tentatively and find it hard to separate the 2018 from the 2019 you? I am sort of in between in a way. I think I had a fresher outlook when I was younger but now with some age and life experiences behind me I tend to view the new year as a continuation of the previous year which is sort of sad isn’t it?
So I tried a lot of new beauty products during 2018 and I’m happy to say that many of them became favourite products of mine. Over the last few months I’ve made a conscious effort to minimise my beauty collection and use up what I have before buying anything new. It sure is a change from years ago when I had multiples of everything; at least 5 or 6 foundations, bronzers galore and I never managed to finish a single one. These days I am trying hard to use what I know and love and not waste money on anything I don’t really need.
Anyway, here’s what I loved during 2018!
Cleanser. I alternated between the LaMav Hydra-Calm Cleansing Crème (so gentle and nourishing!) and Organic Spa’s Foaming Cleanser. If I had to pick one over the other it would be the LaMav Crème Cleanser as it is slightly more hydrating. The La Mav Crème Cleanser is fantastic at taking off the day’s makeup and grime from the face. I also used my staple cleanser throughout the year, Yuva’s Super Cleanse. It’s formulated with a blend of beautiful oils and is really gentle on the skin, making it perfect for all slain type. I often use it as a pre-cleanse and will then follow up with another cleanser.
Day Moisturiser. I tried sooo many this year and found myself reaching for the Rodan+Fields Triple Defence Treatment SPF15, Organic Spa’s Day Moisture and LaMav’s Bio VA5 Wrinkle Smoothing Day Creme the most. The most effective was the LaMav’s as I noticed a visible difference to my skin after using it. It looked a lot smoother and finer and kept my skin nicely hydrated.
Exfoliator. Genie Beauty Exfolidate 3 Triple Action Microdermabrasion Exfoliant Face Scrub hands down was my favourite. This is a gritty scrub that will leave your skin soooo smooth and silky. It’s meant to give you spa like results and I can confirm that it does!
Sunscreen. I trialled a whole heap during 2018 and I have to say the stood out to me the most was the UVIQ Anti-Pollution Facial Sunscreen Milk. It’s got an spf 50, absorbs quickly and did not break my skin out. Sunscreen is the one thing I repurchase without fail as I am a bit vain and want to preserve my skin as much as I can.
BB Cream. Hands down the LaMav Organic BB Cream. This has amazing coverage and I find it is enough if I feel like going ‘makeup free’. Highly recommend this! I took this to Europe with me and by the end of the trip it was all I was using as my skin was so clear and smooth.
Night Cream. Tossing between the Rodan+Fields REDEFINE Night Cream and the LaMav Night Repair Cream. Both are great in their own ways; I feel like the Rodan+Fields one is a teeny bit more effective however my skin always feels amazing using the LaMav one so it’s a true draw.
Best Ointment/All round product. Definitely Lucas’ PawPaw Ointment. I went through two bug tubs during the year as I use it basically every single day. I use it as a lip balm, hand cream, to hydrate my skin at night, the list goes on.
Foundation. Believe it or not I just finished my bottle of the Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation which I purchased over a year ago. This foundation is amazing value for money and will last you ages. It covers so well with the smallest amount; you seriously only need a tiny bit to cover your face. **Update: I just purchased my second bottle last week. It’s priced at $65 and will last me through 2019 so it’s great value for money.
Bronzer. The Tarte Park Ave Princess Bronzer is hands down my favourite bronzer to date. I love how subtle it is on the face, but can be built up if necessary. I always apply this if I need a bit of a boost and if my skin is looking a bit dull and boring.
Under Eye Concealer. Defnitely the Becca Under Eye Brightening Concealer. This makes a huge difference to my undereye circles and brightens them up so well!
Blush. Towards the end of 2018 I started to reach for my Too Faced Papa Don’t Peach Palette and I forgot how beautiful it is on the skin. I like to layer this after bronzer and it adds a really pretty peachy/gold sheen to my cheeks.
Highlighter. I was using the Hourglass Flash Highlighting Stick in Rose Gold layered with the Models Own Sculpt and Glow Highlighter Powder for the majority of 2018. This combo was perfect for a nighttime glow and stayed in place for hours. I bought the Crush On You highlighting palette by Colourpop towards the end of 2018 and I’ve been reaching for this ever since. The palette contains four different highlighters so you can customise according to the look you want. The shades are all buttery soft to the touch and add so much pigment with just one swipe. I plan to keep using this palette until it runs out as it is just so beautiful.
Eyeshadows. Strangely enough, I’ve been using my two individual Colourpop eyeshadows for most of the year and largely ignoring my palettes. The High Tea Super Shock Eyeshadow and the Cornelius Pressed Eyeshadow are in current rotation; one is a matte and the other is a highlighter so it allows me to do a subtle eye look for both day and night.
Lipstick. I’m still working my way through the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea lipstick vault. My current favourite shade is Beach Waves, a mauve/brown shade which gives major 90s vibes!
Self-Tan. For face I love love love EcoTan’s Face Tan Water! It is the BEST self tan for face I’ve ever used and allows me to go foundation free. If you suffer from problem skin I highly recommend trying this out. The key to optimising this product is to apply it consistently each night; I was originally using it once or twice a week and while it gave me some colour it didn’t make much difference. After I started to apply it most nights I noticed my skin was darker and also clearer, so I was able to forego foundation. For the body, I was using the MineTan Self Tanning Mousse in Ash for months until I switched to the LeTan Uber Glow Ash Base Self Tanning Foam which I’ve used ever since. This gives me the perfect ‘natural’ tan and always works (no more tanning accidents yay!).
Handbag. I made my first designer handbag purchase in 2018 and chose the Gucci Soho Bag in Black. I am so happy with it and wear it pretty much everywhere. Highly recommend this bag if you’re looking to break into the designer handbag market.
Teas. Yes, you read right! I’ve always been an avid (ok obsessive) fan of Earl Grey and buy it by the box load whenever it goes on sale. But towards the end of 2018 I started to experiment with spicier, nuttier teas and discovered and I had grown almost bored of Earl Grey. I know I know, I don’t even know myself anymore. My current favourite tea is Terrific Toffee by T2 and I have been drinking it like crazy lately. It’s a comforting blend of caramel tones with bits of toffee blended in and it is HEAVENLY! Seeing as T2 tea is a bit on the pricier side I’ve only been drinking this tea at night as a special treat and sticking to Earl Grey during the day.
Almond Milk. This is a bit random but in 2018 I switched over to almond milk from cow’s milk. There were a few reasons for this. One being that I am always, always bloated and I desperately wanted to get rid of it. If you suffer from bloating you know how uncomfortable it feels, as well as feeling self conscious about it. Another reason for switching over was to reduce my skin acne. Dairy is a huge trigger for my skin problems and when I eat a lot of cheese and other dairy I notice it flares up. I’ve been on almond milk for a while now and while I still suffer from bloating and the occasional skin flare up I have noticed an overall difference.
That rounds up the standout products from 2018 for me. As I get older I’ve noticed that I stick to what I know, instead of trying every new latest release. This was evident on my USA trip where I only bought a handful of new products (as compared to my first USA trip where I made a list of all the products I wanted and spent the equivalent of a small village at Sephora).
Let me know what products you loved during 2018 as I’d love to see them!
